I was ten, and lived on the far east side. The highlight was going to see the tanks at the Eastland shopping center.
The city on the whole is, and will always be, completely disfunctional. The only way you can have a new development is to make it a gated community with it's own security.

My parents viewed Detroit as hopeless back in 1963 and headed for the burbs. Main issue back then was the poor quality of schools.
