As a former resident of Grosse Ile, I can tell you that everyone on the island is happy about this. The power plant is the last of many industial sites along this stretch of the Detroit River channel...
The simple answer is population density. Mass transit just doesn't work without it. Look at all of the world and US cities with effective mass transit. They all have multi-family housing, lots of it....
People forget that Howe was born and raised in Canada [[Saskatchewan) then played for an American hockey team. It's an appropriate name for the bridge.
Does Detroit really need another church? Especially a "mega" church. I don't know the exact number of churches, but in relation to the population of the city, the ratio is probably pretty low.
There are still perceptions that Detroit is not safe. And news stories about carjackings and shootings don't help. True or exaggerated, those feelings persist.
Good article... When influential artists and taste-makers continue to come to Detroit, others follow. But Detroit is starting to sound like an artistic gold-rush boom-town. I hope the excitement can...
I used to live in a townhouse next to the Tomboy back in the '80s. Great to hear about a high-end store coming my old neighborhood. But a nice grocery store or other practical business would make...
I completely agree... but the political realities will not let this happen. Republicans generally hate mass transit since most of the people who use it are either poor or liberal Urbanites. Not...
Even though we are the wealthiest country on earth, we have the lowest level of political will or public support to improve high-speed mass transit of any industrialized country. I would be...
Thanks for posting pictures of the Downriver area. Growing up there, it was often overlooked by the residents of the rest of the metro area. I was often amazed at the number of native metro...
The most insulting thing about the map is that it doesn't include Downriver.
Good article. Reminded me of my days in Palmer Park in the early '80s. Discussions at parties always came around to a crime antidote from all attendees. Muggings, burglaries, car break-ins......
The boats used to stop at Wyandotte's Bishop Park until the mid to late 70's. I remember as a child in the 60's, there would be a band playing as you boarded to boat. Good memories...
I wonder what the current crime statistics are for that part of Dearborn Hts? That might have something to do with the level of fear on the part of the homeowner. He may or may not have been overly...
Sad how little things have changed since the 1980s and the Ethnic Festivals. I don't recall any stampedes back then, but plenty of robberies, assaults, and gang violence. On a positive note, it...
It's all about reducing crime. More Detroit neighborhoods should limit access. When crime goes down, property values go up. And they should install speed bumps.
I can see the rationale behind the re-branding of a neighborhood from a real estate sales perspective, but from cultural/artistic perspective, the old name serves that area better. "Cass Corridor"...
I totally agree with Lowell. The negative reaction to the idea of bus tours is very surprising. Organized tours occur in every city or place of interest. Group tours are especially necessary if you...
My last visit home to Detroit, 2 local friends and I went to Windsor to visit a Canadian friend. No problem getting into Canada, but coming home we were stopped for 20 minutes while the agent...
A good, optimistic article. As a former resident, I agree with one of the suggestions to gate the community. Or at the very least, limit the access streets. Crime has been major factor in the...

The Hyatt/Fairlane in it's heyday.
My comment about "presumed" Detroiters was not meant to offend. Only that Dearborn has a relatively small African-American population and the Detroit border is within a mile of the Hyatt. Therefore,...
I'm not surprised by the news. My family used to meet at the Hyatt's restaurant on the 2nd floor for Sunday brunch. We stopped going a few years ago because the clientele was getting a little too...
I lived in The Park in the early '80s. The Trocedero [[17725 Manderson) and 980 Whitmore. There was a short period of time that Palmer Park did have a private security patrol that tenants voluntarily...
I also think it's hypocritical, but.... That's how the free market works. It's the American way.
