1. Ground is finally broken for the Little Caesar's Headquarters in December.
2. The new arena continues taking shape.
3. Eastland closes.
4. Tigers barely miss out on the playoffs.
5. Pistons barely make it into the playoffs, but crash and burn in the first round.
6. An announcement is made on a mixed-use development on the Monroe Block.
7. Meijer breaks ground on a store on East Jefferson.
8. Construction activity takes place on the Hudson's Block.
9. The street light project is completed.
10. The Lincoln Park Sears announces a closure.

11. A criminal investigation will be launched against the Snyder administration for the Flint water crisis.

12. DPS will file for bankruptcy.

13. The EAA will be dissolved and returned to DPS.

8a. after Gilbert successfully buys the underground parking garage.

14. Absolutely nothing will happen with the Fail Jail and it will continue to suck money while they maintain their stance to keep it versus selling it to Gilbert for a loss.

8b. Once Hudson's site is announced, more retailers will begin to announce they are coming to town.
15. Downtown will add at least one hotel via an announcement [[construction would follow eventually)
16. Book Tower and Stott Building will begin to see construction.
17. Brush Park will begin construction/renovations

My first thought is that 2016 will be the prelude to 2017 with the new arena, M-1, lot of development in Brush Park, and maybe [[?) something going up at the Hudson's site.

Yet, 2016 at least along the Woodward corridor looks like a year of cranes, construction vehicles, etc. etc.

2017 looks like a year for landscaping, streetscaping, etc. projects which were worked on in 2016.

Maybe 2016, besides construction activities will be ANNOUNCEMENTS of things which may or may not start in 2016.

Will 2016 be the year of announcements of activities in areas other than those along Woodward??? River front? HFH area and New Center extended?

Are there plans in 2016 to extend the median and center landscaping they did on Jefferson at the Grosse Pointe Park entrace further down Jefferson [[e.g. Jefferson/Chalmers to Downtown). I think it would make an immediate impact on the beauty of Detroit as opposed to a ghastly 7 lane ashpalt road. Even Gratiot in Roseville, Hall Rd in Macomb, Rochester/Big Beaver in Troy and Woodward in Bham recognize the visual beauty breaking all that asphalt up can have on an area. Ditto for Michigan Ave from MGM to Train Station.

Prediction:

This time next year, Dick Snyder, and a few of his buddies -- Wurfel, et. al., will be prepping for the 2017 perp walk for choosing revenue enhancements over the health of the Flint citizenry. Brian Calley readies his 2017 agenda as new Governor of Michigan, and recall efforts begin immediately.

Federal investigation and multiple lawsuits regarding handling of the Gamrat/Courser "situation". Tea Party Republicans began to circulate materials related to multiple TP Republicans having homosexual sex in the bathrooms of Doug’s Body Shop.
Shhhhhhhh! It’s a can’t miss distraction!!

Charlie LeDuff will actually produce a quality piece of journalism that doesn't use goofy bullshit that makes him look like an idiot and a buffoon.

M.L. Erlick sees LeDuff's surprise quality product and becomes inspired not to follow down the road of LeDuff's stupid journalistic parlor tricks. Finally creates his masterworks [[that isn’t Kwame related) and retires to upstate New York a very happy man.

DPS will reach 1.5B in the hole – after newest “reform” -- and have about 100 teachers left in the District willing to teach.

Michigan teachers will finally receive monies held in escrow that were unconstitutionally withheld by the State as a means to prop up retirement fund that was brutalized by one John Engler and His Merry Band of Hack and Slash Republicans.

Banning straight-ticket voting blows up in the Republicans faces; as they did not realized that is was in fact, their base, that relied on it too much. Democrats sweep both State Senate and House, causing Republicans to flee in a mass panic for fear of retribution, shooting as many guns as they can on the way out. Democrats shower them with love and donuts causing Republicans to melt into the ground where they once stood.

Dan Gilbert goes "Undercover Boss" and gets fired the first week on the job for not making his metrics. Last seen placing a call to MARVIN on his Obama phone.

While 2016 starts off with no cities under an EM, Grand Rapids is somehow taken over by EM. No one knows how it happened, or why – EM just showed up one day and said “Hi, I’m the new EM for Grand Rapids”, and everybody said “OK” and showed them to their office and gave them office keys and a car. No one find out their name until 2017 – and we’ll hold off on that for next year’s predictions.

As far as Snyder, don't be surprised if the federal government launches a criminal investigation against him. That's why all of the rats are suddenly jumping ship and "apologizing."

I also fully expect DPS to file for bankruptcy. The teachers will then be fired and either outsourced to Teach For America or replaced completely by Teach For America instructors.

If some of the positive forecasts above don't take place, look for Detroit Bankruptcy II in 2017. Lost all my healthcare in the last round, probably will lose my pension in the next.

I'm not sure if this is a 2016 or [[early) 2017 prediction:

I was tempted to say climate change warmed this [[2016) Detroit winter a few degrees, but decided to go with something more concrete.

2016 [[and early 2017) will see Brush Park become kind of a lab experiment if Detroit can really come back.

What I mean:

To me, a city is showing signs of coming back when a significant neighborhood shows real tangible signs of revitalization, esp. new construction.

Brush Park is my 2016/17 story. It is an area tangent to CBD/downtown/sports and entertainment. Conveniently located along M-1 and its subway line coming early 2017.

My guess is that Brush Park by 2017 or even 2018, shows the 'ceiling' for complete revitalization of a neighborhood.

If it doesn't happen in Brush Park will it happen at all in Detroit?

If it happens in Brush Park will it happen elsewhere?

It could be a 'weathervane.'

It's just funny that people always start screaming "Global Warming!!!" or "Climate Change!!!" whenever we have a warmer than normal period of weather, but are quiet as a mouse when we have colder or snowier than normal period of weather.

In reality, it's all BS. These sorts of ups and downs have happened many times in Detroit's past 125 years of weather records and I'm sure they will continue to happen over the next 125 years.

I did, HOWEVER, see a chart of the average temperatures for the last 30 years.

There IS a trend... It is warmer.

Hasn't NOAA been measuring temperatures for decades, maybe centuries.

Can we not get an undergraduate student who has taken statistics and calculate the trend line for all of those data points?

Despite what some Congressmen say, one doesn't have to be a 'scientist' to understand this type of data. If Congressmen can understand econometric data, they should be able to understand this type of data.

It would make a nice paper for undergraduate statistics [[get a statistical package and do linear regression).

That's about as clear as it could get. I don't know what's left to argue about. <shrug>

Gee, looks a lot like a graph any college graduate should be able to understand.

If the graph was public approval numbers or campaign contributions, or even national debt, etc. I guarantee that Congressmen would be able to read that graph like 'a book.'

What irks me no end is that the federal government spends billions of dollars each year collecting data on weather, population, housing, employment, health care, agriculture, etc. etc. and politicians will not use them, instead simply talking their pre-conceived talking points.

For the record, I have not stated whether I felt Global Warming or Climate Change was real or not.

I'm merely pointing out how foolish it is to suggest an extreme event, given how variable weather can be due to all of its influences, is attributed solely to Climate Change or Global Warming.

Even scientists who do believe Global Warming or Climate Change is real [[except for Bill Nye) have stopped trying to imply the aforementioned connections as if they were firm.

Wishful thinking on the Snyder investigation of the Flint watergate situation [[blocked all my spam from Clear Water Action seeing as they don't seem to address that one specifically), 313WX. Than again, saying an "investigation is underway" is the biggest thumb-their-nose way the government is in saying "F.U." to the public.

43.) [[are we keeping count?)-More reprisals and gatherings will occur with out-of-town "grass-roots" [[scared white Rednecks with guns) militia types descending on Dearborn because of our Muslim-American population.

75.) Sadly, a mass murder by one or two gunmen with a body count exceeding five will occur well in the northern or possibly western portions of Michigan away from Detroit.

55.) A rise in the trend of overpriced bistros and hipster hang-outs in Corktown/Mid-town going bust will occur.

57.) A suburban cop will pull over an African American motorist for "fitting the description" of someone they are looking for.

67.) A guy will be wondering where that one pen he had rolled off to when it tumbled off his desk. A cat will have a new plaything two days later.

77.) There will be an escalation of squabbling over art murals in Detroit.

78.) One of the top five contestants in Miss America will be Miss Michigan. The winner will be a Trump supporter.

87.) Kmart and Sears finally declare bankruptcy.

213.) A rise in blackouts and rising food prices will make folks more ornery.

222.) A teen from downriver will die from an excess of taking five-hour energy and drinking energy drinks.

451.) A Michigan bookstore will catch fire.

666.) Trump will court Michigan Republican voters, especially certain shameless long-standing pyramid-scheme organizations running out of Grand Rapids. He will hope that his image of a rich man "who made his wealth by concerning himself so much for the little guy" [[versus say being a greedy real estate mogul who evicts and victimizes little people) will carry him.

Just as short-term variation does not prove climate change, neither does it disprove climate change. What counts is the long-term change, which is what that graph shows.

My use of the words "BS" and "screaming" was toward implied firm connections that are made between extreme weather events and Global Warming or Climate Change [[such as a poster's implication that there is a firm connection between Detroit's warmest December on record and Global Warming or Climate Change), not towards the theory of Global Warming or Climate Change itself.

We can quibble over how we discuss the subject including statements that some might make that the data does not 'prove' this point or that. [[that is always a convenient argument. Would someone deny that a similar trend, opposite direction, of Detroit's population is a trend? That is, the data for the last 50 years shows a decided trend in population loss for Detroit.).

However, that graph is compelling in that it has yearly averages for 1 1/4 centuries and has both the global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels both plotted [[the double Y axis graph).

As such one can see year-to-year variability yet the trend is undeniable.

From an explanatory point one can easily correlate the data to increases in world population, industrialization esp. in some countries [[e.g., China, etc.).

So many people have already mentioned many of the things that I would predict. Here are some that I have not seen mentioned much or at all.

1. Someone, probably backed with foreign money [[Hey Carlos Slim), announces a luxury hi-rise condo development Downtown. My guess is the block bounded by Randolph, Bates, Brush and Fort.

2. There is serious talk of a GM/FCA merger, but in the end, Sergio's attitude kills the deal.

3. Kmart is spun off of Sears and sold, at an incredibly low price, to a local Detroiter, who puts the HQ back downtown and start the slow renaissance of building that brand back up.

4. Shovels move on the Hudson block.

5. Detroit City Football Club moves into it's new home in Keyworth Stadium, and near the end of 2016, announces that it is moving into the North American Soccer League in 2017, bringing professional soccer back to Detroit.

6. A Fortune 500 company announces that it is moving it's HQ to Downtown Detroit.

7. Detroit's violent crime rate continues to fall, murders in 2016 end right around 270, or a 10% fall. More importantly to actual Detroiters, lesser crime such as break in's and assaults show an even higher rate of decline.

8. The DPS situation finally starts getting some real attention in 2016, although there is no actual movement on it yet.

9. Trump V. Clinton, with Clinton winning almost every state.

Or

10. Rubio V. Clinton, with Rubio squeaking out a victory.

11. This is the big one....and its timeline extends a little past 2016. As the insurance industry starts assessing buildings based on their potential exposure to rising seas and greater natural disasters, due to long term climate change, companies start looking at the location of their hard assets more closely. Due to its abundant water, relatively mild climate, and low cost of living, the Great Lakes region starts attracting massive investments in hard assets. Factories, data centers, and offices all start popping up all over Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Several high profile companies start to make noise about decamping their headquarters from Miami [[due to rising oceans and the inability to insure assets at a reasonable rate), DFW, Houston and Los Angeles [[heat and water access and insurance rates). The upper Midwest becomes the boom region of the mid 21st century.

A few 2016 predictions, most with a Detroit-Windsor bent:

1. Tender will be awarded for Gordie Howe Bridge with a 2017 construction start planned. The tender will come in well above current budget; but will be awarded anyway.

2. Windsor will start construction on its new City Hall.

3. Canada's new federal government will move forward with marijuana legalization and similar liberalization on Assisted-suicide. This will have an impact on Michigan politics and may affect ballot initiatives this year or in 2018.

4. 2016 will be tough year economically more so in Canada than the U.S.; but Detroit and Windsor will out-perform national metrics.

5. The University of Windsor, facing falling domestic enrollment will continue a push for more international [[including U.S. based students). This will include a suite of programs aimed at joint-degrees with bordering U.S. institutions producing people credentialed in both the U.S. and Canada.

6. Windsor will pursue multiple road diets [[shrinking travel lanes of cars in favour of bike lanes and wider sidewalks)

7. Canada will newly invest in VIA rail on both the operating and Capital side; and Amtrak will get some net new investment. Serious planning will begin for enhancing cross-border rail travel in future years, including some Detroit-Toronto rail service, and likely some Chicago -Toronto service via either Detroit or Pt. Huron/Sarnia

8. The Lake-Erie North shore wine region near Windsor will continue to grow with some ambitious plans announced.

9. Detroit and Windsor will work on at least one new joint bid for an international sporting event [[possible World Junior Hockey Championship, World Cup of Hockey, World Fig. skating championship, among others). This will be a marketed as a move towards a much bigger bid in the future such as World Cup of Soccer or an Olympics though either of those are more than a decade out.

10. New contracts btw the BIG 3 and UAW and Unifor [[former CAW); will result some wage growth for the first time in years. New investments will be secured on both sides of the border, though it remains to be seen which communities will actually get the new/expanded plants.

11. Farmers in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario will all face new regulation and/or enforcement activities related to nutrient/fertilizer use in order to reduce algae blooms in Lake Erie.

12. Ongoing extreme weather events including drought and climate extremes will push material new investment in Great Lakes agriculture.

13. The only 'tropical' fruit native to the Great Lakes area 'paw paw fruit' will become the next big foodie thing, and commercial production will ramp up.

...here's if they actually happened or not this year.

1. Construction is now in progress and has been since August-several months early.
2. In a significant way, even the parking garages are now in place.
3. Never happened, not even a hint of an announcement.
4. I was correct on this one, they finished second in their division behind the eventual AL champions Cleveland Indians, who would later go on to lose the World Series to the Cubs.
5. I was right on this one too, they were swept by the eventual NBA champions Cleveland Cavaliers.
6. Another one I got right, this plan even incorporates the first skyscraper in Detroit since the Greektown Hotel Tower.
7. Another one that never happened and never even had an announcement.
8. Again, nothing this year.
