Who makes the best Pizza within the city limits of Detroit?
Gracie See gets my vote.
it's not Happy's, that's for sure.
In the city limits it's the original buddy's which is an even better pie then it is at the suburban locations. Outside the city you gotta go a couple miles up conant to Louis in Hazel Park.
Within city limits, Buddy's is best.
Supino in Eastern Market is also good, though a bit over-hyped IMO.
Happy's is an atrocity.
Are you trying to start a nuclear war?
Buy Little Caesers! Support Mike Illitch! Heck spend all your paycheck at the Motor City too! Buy Season tickets to the Wings AND Tigers! Buy Atanas' 'Concouis of the City' CD!
Has Little Caesar's gotten worse, or was it always so horrible? I had a slice not too long ago [[after maybe 15 years of going without), and I think the worst supermarket frozen pizza tastes much better.
And I really liked Little Caesar's as a kid. Have my tastes changed, or did they change?
^^
They were really good years ago, but like everything else, it starts to cheap out.

Since moving downtown I’ve been disappointed with the pizza selection. I’ve lived all over the Metro Detroit area and the best [[IMO) is Roma’s in Southgate – love the sweet sauce. I’ve been to the original Buddy’s numerous times and I just don’t find it all the great – but that’s just me. Little Skeezers tastes like the box it comes in, and Dominos is only a slight step above that. Seems like all the good pizza is in the burbs – or New York [[lol).
You couldn't pay me to eat a $5 Hot and Ready. You'd think those $13 Hot and Ready's at The Joe are better :)
i didnt believe it, but cottage inn pizza in the layfayette park strip mall has the best pizza in the city. get there in the am when its fresh out the oven...
We've enjoyed many good pizzas at Motor City Brewing Works . The beer doesn't suck either ...
Yeah, MCBW is good. Gracie See is a real gem. I could see the place from my bedroom window as a kid, and I still go there a few times a year.
Buddy's and Supino's are both good. Niki's isn't as good as it used to be, but it's still pretty good. Pizza Papolis is always good. Of the more franchisee establishments, of which Buddy's and Pizza Papolis could be considered, I definitely have to agree with Cottage Inn and I Amicci's is pretty good.
Of course, Buddy's and Niki's get the nod for carrying on the Detroit style pizza concept. It takes a lot more than being in the Metro area or within the city limits to truly be a Detroit style pizza.
I dont ever remember Little Ceasers being so horrible as it is now...its turned into just a 5 dollar Mcpizza....toppings dont help either it just cost more and tastes just as bad...frozen pizza from the supermarket tastes much better
Not saying it's the best, but, I've never had a bad pizza or slice from Jet's on Jefferson in that strip mall just East of Harbortown.
On the other hand there was a Jet's [[ I think it has closed ) on 7 Mile right near Chalmers. The food there was absolutely horrible.
Pizza Papalis and Pizza Hut are the best to me
They closed and moved into the place on Monroe in the Compuware garage where Papa Romano's used to be. Good riddance, I say. The service was usually pretty bad and more often than not I was overcharged. Seems like I always had to call them on the coupon-priced items. Makes me wonder if it was intentional.
I hate the term "back in the day", but back in the day, Shield's Bar used to make a great pizza. They still exist? Remember, I'm asking from w a y out of the area.....
Z's Villa in Midtown has some pretty tasty pie; good blend of toppings and a good crust.
The original Shields on the east side [[Buddy's neighborhood rival) is gone. They still exist in at least one location in Southfield, maybe others. The pic below is the corner of Davison and Shields. Not sure if Shields was in the empty lot on the left or in the bldg. on the right.Attachment 9884
Buddy's for sure. But when ordering delivery I have to say I Really like Detroit Pizza Factory. Always get a good pie from them...and very reasonable.
I love Shield's. Besides the one in Southfield, I know there was one a bit lower on Telegraph by Warren. There's also one in the City of Warren on 12 mile just east of Mound and there's another on Romeo Plank and 23 mile. It's either Shelby Township or Macomb Township.
There are other Shield's locations... I attended a First Communion party at one at 23 Mile & Romeo Plank in Macomb Twp.
My favorite has always been Buddy's for sure... Jet's is also good. I sometimes order the Little Caesar's Hawaiian Pizza [[I never get the $5 pizza sitting in the warming case)... and I haven't had a bad one yet...
For those in the downtown/midtown/corktown/WSU/woodbridge/mexicantown area... Sicily's Pizza on Vernor is THE BEST!
Vince's on Springwells.
There are three Shield's locations in the Metro Area; on on Maple and Crooks in Troy. I've eaten there fairly regularly and the pie is still very good.
One of my all time favorite pizza's in the area is in Berkley at Sila's. It's the thin crust style and it is to die for.
Best thing to do with a hot n now:

I like some of the small lesser known Pizza places best. On Mich ave near Greenfield, Pizza Kitchen makes a great pie.
Caesar's has some quality control problems. It seems to vary a lot by franchise. The restaurants seem to do a lot better than the carry out places. There's one way up in Gaylord that's outstanding if you order in. The couple of carry out places in the Detroit area I've tried are hit and miss. There are too many consistently good chains to bother with taking a gamble on Caesar's.
Right now our favorite chain places are Buddies and Jet's, but we have the luxury of living fairly close to both Loui's and Green Lantern...
In just the city of Detroit it's Buddy's on 6 and Conant. If you want just downtown I think it's Papalis in Greektown.
For best pizza, I'm probably with many of you when it comes to Papalis.
Didn't that "Grinders" place downtown, in 1001 Woodward, also make a decent pizza?
I only had Jet's once, from the Harbortown location, and didn't particularly like it.
I'm surprised some folks like Jets. I find it cheap-tasting and very, very greasy.
Among the megachains I would say [[worst to first) Happys/Little Caesars/Hungry Howies < Jets <Dominos/Papa Johns.
The new Dominos, IMO, is actually halfway decent.
But ohhh, the heartburn...

The correct answer is Supino's.
Buddy's is definitely the best. Small Plates on Broadway also has excellent, more upscale pizza that's cooked in a wood-fired brick oven. I had a garlic shrimp pizza there a couple of weeks ago that was really, really good.
Disagree with you on Jets, but maybe it is the location. The Jets near Vernier on Mack makes one of the best pizzas, chain or otherwise. Nothing beats Dan Good or Cloverleaf on the east side, in my opinion, but sticking with city proper I'll second Buddy's with a nod to Supinos.
Dan and Vis at Chene and i94 is good
Yes, unfortunately, all Jets Pizza parlors are not the same, since that chain
seems to be pretty prevalent here in Detroit.
The Jets in Royal Oak Twp., on eight mile is the best, while the one on
Vernor, on the Southwest side, has become the very worst lately.
It's gotta be the different owners of the individual locations, which makes the difference.
Otherwise, it's gotta be Buddy's [[eat-in) on Conant/McNichols.
I have never tried Gracie See. I will change that soon.
It's Jets & if anyone knows of a way to get me a hot fresh one in Portland OR - I'll pay handsomely
Nonas Pizza on Harper and Allard. Excellent Pie
A couple of new ones downtown. Slices [[next to CVS) and Cottage Inn [[Compuware building).

Red White and Green at Supino's hands down if you like Italian style pizza, light, fragrant, very thin crust with just the right amount of burnt on the edge, usually hand made by the owner. If you like American style, with heavy crust, heavy cheese, heavy bread, heavy oil, etc. you might want to try Domino's or Little Ceasar's, Jet's, Pappa Romano's, Papalis, etc. In that style a cut above would be Shield's or Buddy's, even Cottage Inn. It's all good if you are hungry enough but really, Supino's is exceptional and superior by a long shot.
As far as good pizza, here are my favorites in no paticular order...
#1 Buddys Pizza. The pizza seems to taste better the closer you get to 6 mile and Conant.
#2 Hungary Howies [[Phone 313-886-4500) For some reason the location on Mack in Grosse Pointe woods tastes best. The one in Hamtramck by my office, just doesn't taste the same for some reason.
#3 Vinces Bakery on 8 Mile and Schannor by Al Long Ford. Its best to order a 24 slice tray, been going there for years.
#4 Millers Party Store on Van Dyke between 8 and 9 Mile. They are part of the Buschamies franchise, which for some reason tastes better than the other locations. The owner is really cool!
#5 Sorrentos Pizza on 9 and Van Dyke. Can't get them to deliver to my office in Detroit, but its a very good pizza.
#6 Louies Pizza in Hazel Park on I believe 9 Mile by the Racetrack
#7 Uncle Pauls Pizza on Mack Ave in Grosse Pointe Woods [[Phone 313-884-7991)
#8 Carlos Pizza on Grosebeck and 16 Mile Road. This location is right behind the Kroger at the end of the strip mall.
#9 Pepperoni Grill on Greater Mack ave in St. Clair Shores. This is more of an Itallian Resturant, but they do serve good Pizza and are very reasonable.
#10 Flat Planet Pizza by eastern Market. Its been 3-4 years since I last ate here, but they where voted one of the best pizza places by the Detroit news several years ago. I ordered there 3-4 times and the pizza was good. Just too much of a hassle to order from them and then have to go pick it up because of where they are located and they don't deliver to my office.
The westside seems a galaxy away to me. I've never been to Gracie See's, despite having had family in Warrendale. Can I catch the Tigers game there?
Bob's Pizza on 7 mile near Evergreen has a pretty good pie.
The new pizza joint in downtown Ferndale, MiChigo Pizza has an amazing Chicago style pie. A nice sweet sauce, on par with Shield's, and a pretty cool interior. Check the MetroTimes, they usually have 15% off coupons.
But, Louis Pizza on Dequindre north of 9 Mile is the best.
Sicily's on W. Vernor is tops! Just wish there were more sit down Pizza restaurants.
Roman Village is good so is Vince's. am hoping that when Octavia opens they'll have
a decent pizza. I remember Luigi's downtown and LaLanterna's and even Famous, then going home there was Norbens on Michigan Ave.
is little italy's still on 8 mile? used to pick one of those up here and there. we used to get nona's all the time too but haven't had it in probably 10-15 years
My wife and I just discussed this while eating our favorite bar pizza [[Town Pump). For thin crust new York style Supino's is untouchable. For classic Detroit style we vote Niki's [[although if the mythical shield's in the kales ever opens we'll try it). For the cheap and I want now dispute all the hate on this forum, we love Little Ceasers. For we can wait for delevery from a chain it's Ammici's or Jets. Chicago style can kiss my Detroit ass.
The box tastes better than everyone of the pizzas mentioned. Especially buddy's their pizza living on reputation but the pizza itself has not been good for decades! Almost every pizzeria in town uses the useless modern pizza oven not the proper stone or brick ovens. For the most part the pizza sucks here but if you want a decent NY style thin crust pizza try Bomarito's in St. Clair Shores. Plus 3 large with one topping is only $12.00 and you can get a different topping on each pizza.
I wonder when was the last time Mike Ilitch himself tasted one of his pizzas.
I recall Little Caesars being more of a family oriented place. It seemed more small town, neighborhood pizza than mega-chain store pizza. Heck, even the sit down Little Caesars were pretty darn nice and the upscale America's Pizza Cafes weren't that bad.
1) Regarding Buddy's, obviously thousands of people disagree with you, including many national food writers. But go ahead and think whatever you like- more Buddy's for me.
2) There most certainly are places in the city with brick pizza ovens, including Small Plates.
3) I've been to a lot of pizzerias in NYC and most of them do not use stone or brick ovens.
.. any good chicago-style pizzas served locally?
...any coney island places serve good pizza/slices?
Not in Detroit but Georgios in Rochester is really good!
PizzaPapalis is good Chicago style.
Supino is good NY style.
Buddy's is good Detroit style.
There are very few NY-style pizzerias in Metro Detroit. But it is definitely a different type of pizza than the norm in this area.
Go to DiFara on Avenue J in Brooklyn and you may change your mind. That is some mindblowing pizza.
Better yet, go to Naples. Amazing, but very different than the Michigan norm.
I have heard good things about Pauls' Pizza on Vernor. But I have never tried it myself.
http://paulspizza.net/
The pizza at each Buddy's location is pretty consistent - the pizza at the original location is no better than the other locations. I do agree with the poster that Buddy's now pretty much lives on its reputation - it's not what it used to be.
Michago pizza in Ferndale has the best Chicago style pizza
The last time I had Buddy's, it was remarkably bland. I remember loving it years ago, but was really disappointed with how flavor-less it was...especially for the price.
The last time I had Jet's, I was sick for 2 days after.
I'm a Supino fan. I think PizzaPapalis is okay for what it is. There are a few other mentions here I'll need to try out.
Not the best, but Amicci's in Hamtramck is very good. I believe they have a few other locations including SW Detroit.
Might be the best of the takeout joints that I've tried.
WOW you must really love the box! Let's see to much and lousy dough way to much sauce but usually enought cheese even thought it also tastes like they just went to the grocery store to purchase it! And I know there are few traditional ovens here but its interesting the you could only name one place! Lastly all of the best places in NYC, Boston and Philidelphia plus my favorite pizza in AC use the proper oven. As for Buddys' if you want to eat crappy pizza be my guest I will not stop you!
NY is style of pizza i.e. thin crust! Pretty much every non square or non stuffed pizza sold anywhere is NY style so get your facts stright. As for Buddy's I have been going to the original location probably before you were born and have watch the deteriortion of the product fall to the point that I cannot even think about comsuming it anymore! It also interesting that they had to lie on their radio ads to the point that they had to change the wording!
Even better than Gracie See's, which was my favorite, is Marveso's on Wayne Road south of Warren in Westland. Absolutely outstanding flavors and crust.
I delivered at one of the first Little Caeser shops, and the pies were nothing like they are now. The dough was made in big mixers in each shop from scratch, and the cheese was good stuff. I think the big change was when they went to 10 minute pizza. They had to change the dough recipe and do something funky to the cheese to make it cook that fast in a standard low-temperature oven.
Also, Orthophonic-- I can remember a bunch of times that we went to Buddy's AND Shield's to make astute taste comparisons. They were only a couple of blocks apart, as I recall. Sometimes we'd go east a few block and visit the Turtle Soup Inn, too. That was a busy area for some serious chow.
Gracie See's Newest Pizza has been my favorite for a few years now, Yet I grew up by the original Little Ceasars in Garden City, I liked their pizza but now I can't say it is good. When Bob's on 7 mi opened my Uncle forgot about crossing Evergreen to get to LC. We liked that pizza and miss it till this day. BUDDY'S is still good in my opinion, But I'd rather eat at Gracies, or even the almost Detroit Roman Village on Dix.
No, this is not NY-style pizza.
NY-style is wide, thin, hand-tossed style of pizza, with high-gluten flour and light sauce.
There are very few places in MI with NY-style pizza. There's one in Farmington Hills, Supino has some NY-style versions, and I think a place at Square Lake & Woodward.
The crackly thin-crust style is Naples-style. Regular non-square pizza [[your typical Dominos or Jets) is just American-style pizza.
OK, now, it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about. NY style does indeed have a thin crust, but it is also soft and and has to eaten folded in half. If you think most of the pizza chains that make "thin crust" pizza are NY style, you're just plain wrong. I haven't been to Supino's but the only place in the area I know of that has something approaching NY style is NYPD in Ann Arbor.
And you will will also commonly find square pies in NY that are referred to as sicilian- style, with a thicker crust and more cheese. This is probably where the Buddy's-style Detroit pizza originally arose.
When its all said done bham1982 said it best before I could, all round thin crust pizzas are derived from Naples style! We all should get our facts straight! But that does not excuse the lousy pizza in a metropolitan that should have plenty of very good pizzarias!
The best pizza in the city is on Conant 1 mile down from Buddys. It's in a cinder block building and is called Amar Pizza .
11608 Conant Street
Hamtramck, MI 48212-3138
[[313) 366-0980
I live just a couple blocks from them. You can test yourself by getting their Ghost Pepper pizza. It is delightfully hot but still tasty. You can get it even hotter than that if you dare to ask.
They have a bunch of exotic pizzas. You will have to see their menu. But their pizza that I really Jones for is the Chicago deep dish. It is about 2 inches tall. We pick it up at work for lunch. By the time we get back to the parking garage at the Fischer building it is still steaming. Man, that thing is good.
They were just robbed a couple nights ago at 10 pm. They should have thrown a couple ghost peppers into the robber's face.
Dan and Vis is good but I prefer Chene Trombly Market which I think has same quality but with larger portions. Not located at Chene and Trombley they are at 94 service drive just West of Mt Elliot [[south side of 94) you can catch them on the MT Elliot 94 off ramp heading East. Delish.
Best ever was Third Street Saloon with Iris at the helm in the late 90s early 00s.
Rick, Is that ghost pepper pizza new? I didn't see it on their website. Sounds crazy, though. I've never tasted that pepper, I know it's crazy hot, though!
Stromberg2
They sell it but it's not on their menu. Just ask for it It's one of those Detroit things you just have to know, I guess.
Too be honest, it used to be on their menu, but I guess the resident marketing genius took it off. But ask them about it. It is still one of our favorites at work.
I've taken some die-hard deep dish pizza eaters from Chicago to Pizzapapalis and they absolutely loved it. I miss it very much.
Shields on E. Davison is long gone, but they had fabulous pizza --What I had when they were on 12 mile near Mound was horrible -- I gave them 3 chances ... 3 too many!! They closed down ---I wonder why? Buddy's on Conant and Louis [just ouside the city limits in Hazel Park ] are excellent - Cloverleaf and Green Lantern should be sought out as well
I've never had New York pizza-- I'm sure somewhere they have great pizza -After all,, they have so much of everything!! I guess when you're there, everything [as well as your senses] is enhanced - Just being there is part of the experience - On television I have seen 100+ year old brick ovens baking what looks like excellent pie In NYC --- I myself don't go to New York for the pizza
Has anyone tried Slices yet?
http://www.modeldmedia.com/devnews/s...zza071911.aspx
Buddy's on Conant and Nikki's serve the best Detroit style pizza.
Supino and MCBW serve the best traditional thinner crust pizza. Friends of mine very much like the pizza at Angelina's, with the super thin and crispy italian crust, though that isn't quite my style.
I think Detroit has plenty of good pizza options!
In the burbs, Louie's is best.
Ghost Pepper Pizza is back on the menu at Amar's.
