Hope and change as possible for the city. Others seem doom and gloom. But we're on Trump's radar.

How would you like to see President Trump help cities? What shibboleths can he break to make positive change for the city we all love? What might you say if you were in his cabinet? What laws should be changed, that we could not imagine President Obama nor. President Bush change?

I think there's a chance [[who knows with the hot air that comes from Trump's mouth) for an increase in infrastructure projects, and this could benefit Detroit.

Maybe he'll help out struggling urban cities with home ownership by lowering PMI insurance for FHA loans.

The only thing I can think of is that spending his entire life in NYC he might have more intuitive appreciation for transit and also public housing.

Elaine Chao is a sensible and qualified pick for the Secretary of Transportation in a republican administration. From what I can tell she supports public transportation and understands its ability to move people efficiently and its role in giving individuals access to employment and its positive effect on the economy. She also seems to understand that major highway construction is a thing of the past. She's also married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, which could help things politically.

The problem though, is that Trump's base are pretty much the exact people who think that public transit is a giant wasteful and corrupt scheme to pour money into expensive toys for snowflake urban liberals and support lazy welfare blacks. When he talks about infrastructure projects I don't think he's talking about the kinds of projects that the city of Detroit really needs.

And as far as HUD goes, while spending his life in NYC should give him appreciation of the power of public housing, I think his own personal experiences has had the opposite result. HUD is something that he comes into conflict with through his real estate activities. He obviously doesn't care very much about the subject or else he would have made sure to appoint someone at least remotely suitable for the position. Instead he wants Ben Carson who has absolutely no experience with HUD, or running large organizations, or knowledge in any of the policy areas that HUD encompasses, and with the handful of things Carson has said he seems to be against some of the basic ideas of HUD. And once again I'd bet that his supporters are some of the people most hostile to HUD's activities.

But these things aren't things that other presidents didn't support, they're things that at the national level democrats have supported and that republicans have willfully denied their objective benefits. I don't think there are any policy positions that aren't covered by the two parties, and it doesn't seem like Trump has mixed up the electorate to change the underlying dynamics of these things.

The only other thing I can think of is that throwing money at the military might help Warren.

I'd be interested to see how he fixes infrastructure throughout cities, especially here in Detroit.

He mentioned that and as well know, roads and bridges are in dire need of that.

I just listened to Charlie Rose's pre-inaugual show. Rose asked the panel what would be Trump's equivalent to Nixon's 'Going to China'. Jeff Greenwalk of the Atlantic said it might be 'Trump Invests in Inner Cities and Infrastructure' [[my words)... citing how often he's mentioned the topic.

I think it's hilarious he used the term "from the urban sprawl of Detroit". Usually it's "from the inner city of [insert Rust Belt city here]" or "from the suburbs of [inset any American city here]. I mean if a kid is from either the urban sprawl of Detroit or the plains of Nebraska, you're more than likely to white, middle class. Yeah that's showing American diversity!

Let me strongly agree with Jason's observation about Dr. Carson, One of the nation's serious challenges is with economic development and both racial and economic segregation in the nation's older cities. The Secretary of HUD could, potentially, play an important role in addressing these very serious issues. From his writings and comments, I see no evidence that Detroit's Dr. Carson has given serious thought or written about these issues.

I didn't take it to mean only the sprawl [[aka, just the suburbs), I took it to mean Detroit and the densely populated areas that extend from it.

Having recently attended a lecture on immigrants in the 1800's, you realize just how and when roads, bridges, mines, railroads, etc. were constructed. I'd like to think that replacing infrastructure is very important at this time.

From the point-of-view of the intelligentsia, this is bad. From the common man, this could be good.

How might Trump help Detroits? Might he hurt Detroits? Yes. And yes.

It is, however, an opportunity for new things, new ideas -- because he has no allegiance, and doesn't even seem to care about what anyone else thinks. I would expect that we'll see both good and bad results. More Flints [[50 years ago, heaven on earth), and more Portlands [[50 years ago, a boring, backwater).

I think though Wesley, that there are probably winning bets out there in the three Detroit casinos about the outcome.

The winners have a pretty good theory about the common man being left out of the calculation. The winners also think that the many GOP agenda keepers on the far right will take advantage of the vacuousness of the grand Poobah. NPR and PBS and the NEA are on the way out. Low premium / High deductible health insurance policies are in. What makes you think the quiet subdued Intelligentsia in US universities will be the suffering kind when everything points to the dumbing down and impoverishment of the nation as a whole. What makes you think that there is culture there and then there are hamburgers here.

I've read the pundits comments criticizing the word "carnage". Such a dark vision they say. But how better to describe, for instance, the murders of 6,000 African-American males last year. Trump proposed buying American and building infrastructure. I wonder how many of the next day's white women protesters own foreign cars. Bernie Sanders used to support infrastructure, sharing the wealth, and opposing TPP too. That was before he bought his new $600,000 dacha. Bernie's former supporters should at least be excited about those mentions. I'm dubious that Trump will accomplish half of what he promised but candidate Obama, in 2007, promised to end the Iraq war "immediately" yet his supporters don't seem to care that Hillary/ Obama foreign policy instead killed hundreds of thousands and made millions more into refugees.
