What Movies Scared You?

As All Hallows Eve draws nigh, thoughts turn to fright and what movies scared you and why. I'm not a scary movie fan as I get too involved ... so he are my 5 movies

5. Abbott and Costello Meet the Wolfman. Being a kid and watching that face change scared the baby pee right out of me.
4. Rosemary's Baby The scene with the eyes, the eyes!
3. Exorcist The crazy floating bed, the vomiting, head turning ...
2. Evil Dead The whole thing from the floating POV shots to the vines coming alive ...
1. Silence of the Lambs The sewing machine scene.

So what ones are yours and why?

"Poetic Justice," featuring Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur.

Absolutely horrifying, once I realized that director John Singleton, and everyone else involved, meant for this pitifully juvenile and entirely brain-dead movie to be taken seriously. I'm not kidding, when I say that when I run into it on TV, I watch it for laughs.

Gort scared the hell outta me in the original "Day the Earth Stood Still"

And in the original 'The Thing', the scene where the isolated arctic outpost personnel are huddled together in the storeroom and the geiger counter starts ticking faster and faster as the 'thing' approaches...

I have an entry, but please keep in mind that I was very young when I saw "Them," a movie which featured giant ants. It got to me so bad that I'm not sure I could watch it, now, without getting at least a little shaken up.

Them! oh yeah... jeeps running through the storm drains ... staring James Whitmore I think, or maybe a James Arnes. Still very spooky with that humming sound effect when the ants are coming.

As far a Poetic Justice goes ... I sort of liked it in parts ... the family reunion they crash and when that fool jackrabbits on the mail bags, jeeze. funny yes, scary? only from the standpoint that it would have guaranteed us a string of Tupac movies, which would have been a waste of silver nitrate.

Like Gnome, Silence of the Lambs and Rosemary's Baby would certainly make my list; but my all-time scariest movie would have to be Wait Until Dark [[1967) starring Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.

The Tingler, with Vincent Price. It's a b movie in black and white. I was 23 years old and scared the heck out of me at home, while watching on tv. Why???????

Recently, "Drag Me To Hell" with Allison Lohman. That is the most scared I've ever been while watching a movie. The old gypsy lady scared a scream outta me. Really, I screamed in the theater.

The Tingler, Wait Until Dark, and Rosemary's Baby. I've never seen Silence of the Lambs. That one scared the daylights out of one of our sons - therefore, I've not had the desire to see it.

And I think The Pit and the Pendulum with Vincent Price. Saw that at the Eastown Theater when it first came out. Being a kid, Vincent Price scared the hell outta me anyway.

I used to LOVE The Tingler! That movie was the best! I can't believe it came on tv because it was soooo scary. They really don't make them like that anymore. Remember the scene behind the curtain in the hospital when he pulled the thing up out of the body?

There was another movie called Ssssss, about some people in a carnival and somehow one of them was turning people into snakes. Sounds hokey but it was a really good creepy movie.

The Thing remake is one of my all-time faves.

The old movies were the best! and I was really young but Attack of the Killer Tomatoes used to scare me, lol. I showed it to my son on youtube the other day and we laughed SO hard at how stupid it was, but it really used to scare me!

Storm of the Century is really good too, as was the original Carrie.

Wolf Creek. Its about a serial killer in Australia, based on a true story. Not sure that it scared me, but it was very disturbing. Loved Day The Earth Stood Still, the original. I wish Gort could patrol the streets of Detroit.

Basically, anything with demons, vampires and zombies, because the mere mortals never seem to stand a chance. For the life of me, I can't figure out this new love affair we're having with vampires now???

The older black and white thrillers scared me the most. A few have been mentioned in this thread already.

The Mask [[1961 film)

It was about an ancient tribal mask which caused its wearer to experience increasingly nightmarish hallucinations. The mask was addictive and gradually drove the wearer mad.

The hallucination scenes were made with that 3-D effect that the audience would experience when wearing blue and red tinted glasses. The audience was instructed to put the glasses on whenever they heard the ominous command "Put the mask on NOW!" :eek:

It was a stroke of genius to equate [[in the audience's mind) the real life glasses with the fictional mask. It draws you right into the story, which is why it was so scary.

Did anyone mention "The Shining"?

The Shining did creep me out, But as a kid I would watch the friday night horror flix on channel 7. My father let me stay up for them. As for the movie that scared me the most Psychomania, My father hated motorcycles and said I would turn into a frog if I rode one.Havn't yet but I don't push my luck.

Ya know what? I forgot about The Shining - yeah - that one scared me too. Reading the book scared me as well.

And Psycho - the original. Was quite sometime before I could take a shower if I was alone in the house.

" The Haunting" , 1963 black and white version with Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. The creepiest movie I have ever seen.

The Birds. People getting their eyes pecked out! :eek:

The Omega Man scared the daylights out of me and gave me nightmares for a week

all those Vincent Price movies? they made me laugh even when I was a kid

Jaws. I didn't go swimming for two years.

Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. Saw it as a kid and had nightmares about the cyclops for days afterwards.

"The Pit & the Pendulem" wins hands down for me. When that dead chick is whispering "Nicholas"...that will drive you nuts.

"Fallen" & "End of Days" both give me the creeps.

Ha, The Day of the Triffids is classic! I'm not sure how scary it is, but I love it. Wolfman Mac played it with some awesome Dave Ivey props, but we've discussed that before.

Schindler's List.

A more recent classic..."The Orphanage".

The scariest movies of the last 35 years were "The Sentinel" with an amazing all-star cast including: Chris Sarandon, Christina Raines, Eva Gardner, Eli Wallach, Christopher Walken, Jerry Orbach, Jose Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy, Sylvia Miles, Beverly D'Angelo, John Carradine, Jeff Goldblum, Deborah Raffin, amongst others- and "The Exorcist" hands down [[and heads around!).

In The Tingler, didn't you see the thing going across the bottom of the screen as if it was in the theatre?

I just love a good ghost story. Sometimes, they can truely frighten me. What a thrill. All others make me laugh. Some favorites:

There are some terrific Japanese and Korean made ghost movies. One good choice is Shutter.

After my last post I thought I'd watch The Changeling again. Hadn't seen it for many years. This has got to be one of the best ghost movies ever. Still as scary as it was the first time i seen it. Ya know how a scary story can make the hair on your arms stand up? This movie makes the hair on the bottoms of my feet stand up.

The original "THE THING" was scary... but decades later the remake of "THE THING" was downright nerve wrecking!

That is the only way to get rid of the tingler. SCREAM............

Wow, I can still see that trailer telling the people in the audience to scream........

I think if I read correctly, that some movie theatres literally wired the seats to vibrate or move when the Tingler went across the screen......and again, if I read correctly, they had medical staff available to those that thought they were having a heart attack.............

One thing I remember about the Tingler was that the wife of the man who murdered her was also known as Miss Lonely Hearts, the lady in that famous move REAR WINDOW, with Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly, 1954

That man really hated his wife, so much he was willing to let Price kill her.............she was a mess, lol

Pam mentioned The Birds. Oh Hell Yes. Terrifying. I just didn't remember it at the time when I mentioned Them. But definitely, yes, The Birds was about as scary as a movie could be, at the time.

I forgot about 1408...very good and under rated IMO.

John Carpenters "Prince of Darkness".

Here is one that really surprised me as it was a remake of a very well done original..."The Omen" with Liev Schreiber. Mia Farrow with all of the plastic surgery really kicked things up a notch.

Well, they got a website for all of this. It's called Kindertrauma, http://www.kindertrauma.com/and they would love to hear any stories.

Basically, for me, all you had to do was tell me a movie was scary and I would start crying, cover my eyes, beg my older brother to turn it off, and quickly leave the room. Even hokey made-for-T.V. crud like "This House Possessed" or "Manitou" [[even though the concept of magic powdered lines used to create a barrier against evil intrigued me) freaked me out. My brother's interest in afternoon Daikaiju stuff [[like Godzilla, Ultraman, Giant Robot, etc.) would unsettle me because of the cacophony of hideous, inhuman shrieks.

Yeeup. I was one scared little shorty. That was-until the Ghostbusters came along and taught us you could fight back. Thanks Danny and Harry [[R.I.P.)-and for the timely slime sequel!

The last two movies to rattle me were "Cube" and "Session 9"-both of which were the kind of independent films that IFC used to play.

For you fans of Carpenter's "The Thing" [[which took a long time to earn it's large cult following); There is Outpost 31http://www.outpost31.com/-a forum site [[uh-oh-one of those) for obsessive Thing fans or just some folks looking for answers or some trivial tidbit. There are a ridiculous amount of fan poster mock-ups or art or what have you on Pinterest, EBAY, Deviant Art,and all of the usual sources. Rob Ager [[and the Collative Learning site) have some definitely esoteric takes and interpretations on the Thing [[plus the "Was Child's infected?" video on Youtube-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SppG-I_Dhxw) and other films [[mostly by Kubrick). There is also this documentary about the making of The Thinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B48Yp00LitE. One can also just read the short story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell [[aka. Don Stuart) which Carpenter's take was closer to resembling; yet, Campbell had some views I can't get behind.

Invaders from Mars [[1953) 1 hr., 18 min. The Martians don't debut until the 57:26 mark.

The first scary movie I ever watched. Mom disapproved. Dad overrode. Thanks, Dad!

Hush..Hush Sweet Charlotte was shown at our all night party in January 68 at LPHS. One part of a movie that bothered me was the scene in "The Day After" when the missiles were leaving their silos. We spent a lot of time out west and passed a lot of those silos. Often wondered how horrifying it would have been to be passing by and seeing the missiles launching. "Cat People" was pretty good also.

REC is a pretty scary movie from 2007. It is available on the internet with English subtitles.

was my first lesson as a young, impressionable child to finally drive home deeply what all of that "Atom Bomb/Nuke" talk was about. We all had the same fear looming over us in the '80s as those from three decades prior. Then the Iron Curtain fell, and nobody talked about nuclear proliferation or threats in the '90s onward [[guess Zappa was right).

Strange how it never gets talked about anymore.

One movie guaranteed to make you cry [[whether you like Japanime or not) is "Grave of the Fireflies".

'The Secret'. This movie is an example of how people waste their live-time on acquiring material goods, on magic. It's scary to see how people die. Although the meaning of human being is to come to God as a spiritual being. The movie 'CONSCIOUSNESS AND PERSONALITY. FROM THE INEVITABLY DEAD TO THE ETERNALLY ALIVE' says about it.

Nothing really scares me anymore - just the gross disemboweling for the lack of decent scripts and Hollywood money. That knocks my Netflix set down to 30% excluding teen films, gay coming of age, and really crappy comedies.

Good thread to resurrect! I stay/ stayed away from any film with word 'Chud' or 'Slither' in it.
