Hahahaha. Oh, man. That's funny. Welcome to Detroit-Hamtramck.
I hope making pickles in a former axle plant doesnt turn them into pixels, eh?
Check out their website. Their t-shirts are made in Brooklyn, New York. I shall never eat another McClure's pickle!
Detroit News article. I've never had one of their pickles; how are they?
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2...mer-American-A
They're OK. I prefer Perkin's.
In all seriousness though, when I'm back in Michigan I will be giving these a try.
Does Mudgie's still provide pickles as an appetizer while waiting for meal, I know that Eph's used to do it and Mudgie's continued with the same deal. But for some reason the last time I was at Mudgie's I don;t remember having them?
I think I paid $4 for a little jar of their relish and it was disgusting. Not a huge fan. They are $$$ but someone is buying them and they are creating jobs so thats good.
A once legendary AAM plant is now a sleazy pickle factory. YUM YUM! now those East Indians and Yemenese folks can havest and cut those pickles and put into the jar. It would be nice the pickle with go on Koegel polish dogs.
YAY Hamtramck residents are saved, now they can stay and save its downtown from becoming like Chene St.
The pickles are really good. I would buy them more often if they werent $10 a jar.
Topors are the Best!
That entire blue complex is going to be a pickle factory? That's hilarious!
I'm gonna try this michigan product, next time I'm at the store, but the price seems a little pricey.
Best pickles I've ever had were "Hengstenberg"... a German brand without as much of a vinegary flavor... they have those at Meijer's and Nino Salvaggio's.
I love supporting local businesses, but unfortunately I can't stand pickles.
I just read an article that stated that they were operating out of a 2,300 square foot kitchen a few years ago. It's great to see a local company expanding, good for them.
Is the buidling sandwiched in between Hamtramck and Detroit?
last time I was at Mudgies all you recieved was a spear with your sandwich. ALthough it looked like you could ask for more.
I like McClures. They are a bit expensive but good. I actually like their spicey relish, that's what I buy most often from them. And their chips are good too!
Slightly off topic, but what's going on with AAM? Do they do any production at that complex or do they just maintain their headquarters there?
Their headquarters is still there [[250 workers), but all of their manufacturing has moved to Mexico.
Apparently it's because Council wouldn't extend their tax breaks.
That said, I don't think it was all worth it in the end. We lost thousands of jobs from AAM [[many of which consisted of folks who probably commuted from the suburbs anyway) to shift 20 jobs or less into the city from the suburbs.
Seems pretty dead now, some admin staff and a skeleton maintenance crew.
I don't think it was the city not extending tax breaks. There was a huge strike there and the management said, OK, we'll move your jobs to Mexico. Bye.
Hamtramck took a big hit on tax revenues, thousands of jobs lost, and this fortified headquarters basically turns its back on the community.
I know, DetroitYES. Go ahead. Blame the union. Not the people who moved the jobs to Mexico.
They might want to change their company name to MAM; Mexican axle and manufacturing...
neat. I wonder will there be any new jobs at all at this facility?
Where does the company get its cucumbers? Michigan farms at all? Perhaps if Detroit-based farming can take off to some degree, this can be a cooperative effort.
Hype, most 'cukes come from da tumb and Saginaw Valley. They are rotated with the sugar beets and corn. Vlasic used to have huge operations in towns like Croswell.
This plant's location will allow the cukes to get trucked in via I-75 or M-53. Pretty good location.
A pickle plant in Hamtramck makes sense to me. Anyone up for some dill pickle soup?
Just curious, as I drive past here every day. Is this the building between Omaha Automation and the old Ivan Doverspike carcass? That would make for a bustling little corner, with the RIC, Wolverine and Freezer Services.
Their bloody mary mix is incredible - and also the only vegetarian bloody mary mix I've seen.
McClure's is great!
Wonder how long before Bay Valley swallows them?
So the pickle factory expands into AMA, wasnt Kowalski looking to expand, would not even have to leave town. Oh thats not the plan, they want a tax break or they will leave town.
Well I finally broke down and bought a jar of their pickles. I was not impressed. I paid $9 and in my opinion they are not nearly as good as Topor's or Vlasic deli dills or even the Meijer version of deli dills. They are somewhat better than store-brand dill pickle spears, but not by much.
But I wish them luck opening and operating a facility in Detroit, you can't fault them for trying. And maybe I bought a bad batch, but at $9/jar I won't be giving them a second try anytime soon.
I love them. They remind me of the home made ones my Grandma used to make. They make a great Bloody Mary mix too.
Anyone know the name of the pickles made at the pickle factory which used to be on St Aubin and Farnsworth?
This company must be doing well. I just picked up a jar of their dill pickles from my usual supermarket in Vancouver, BC.
I was wondering the samething too, how are the cucumbers being transported to this facility. Truck or Rail? Both the I-75 Freeway & CN/GTW Holly Sub Railroad Tracks are there.
The last major pickle maker historically to be in Detroit and Michigan related was Vlasic. Their a pickle processing plant is in Imlay City.
There must be someone here who knows about rail shipping. Am curious. I doubt its economical to ship perishable, light items by rail in smallish quantities. But don't know. My guess is that rail would rather spend their energies moving 6 100-car trains of coal daily from Wyoming to Duluth, and not so much 1 traincar twice a week from the Thumb to Hamtramck.
I saw several varieties of of McClure's pickles in my local Vancouver supermarket recently. They now say Product of India. I didn't buy.
HA!! Now you know why I shop at Aldi's. All their products [[minus seasonal produce) are made either in the USA, Germany or other parts of Europe. Dollar Stores, Kroger and other retailers sell some items from China, Vietnam, and as you mention... India. I avoid that stuff like the plague....
Here's what McClure's has to say about this [[in response to a question from someone named Sherry on their Facebook page, posted last November):
Quote:
Hi Sherry! Not all of our pickles are produced in India. Some of our "Big Box" retailers require a lower price point, and have opted for this option as a way to keep prices down. But know that we carefully sourced our partner. The family in India is much like ours: two brothers that care a great deal about product quality and food safety. I hope that helps. Know that we still make so so many pickles in Detroit -- our home town -- and we always will.
Mmm I love pickles!
^^^ I love home made pickles...:D...Not as briny as store brought...
PM me a bottle!
I love Aldi, and just shopped there yesterday. You need to read the label, even there. When they get the German Week items, for the last year or so, one type of pickle is still from Germany and the other type is from India.
I do note that they switched canned mushrooms from China to the Netherlands a couple of years ago, much better. There 75% fruit spread is still from Germany in Detroit, but I bought some in Toledo last month that is now from Poland. They did cut the price on this item from $2.29 to $1.99. Also, the black olives in a can are still from USA at my Aldi, but in Toledo, they had switched to "American Style" black olives from Spain [[still yummy and now with a pull tab).
^^^ Aldi's takes some getting used to but once you find things you like they are pretty cool!
How many 'untouchables' do the two brothers use in their plants?
I'm not thrilled with Aldis out here in the boonies. Last two or three times I was there, the store was very disorganized, things on wrong shelves, no shelf tags/prices and so on. Not to mention the hordes of elders who think the aisles are their personal living rooms to spread out in.
^^^ What!! Hordes of elders? How where they spreading out and about? Canes, walkers and wheelchairs? LOL!
Yes, Aldi's varies from store to store. I like the one Mac and Chalmers. Or the Eight mile near Livernois.
That, and leaning on their cart on one side of the aisle reaching across the aisle effectively blocking the whole thing. Or having a community meeting of several, discussing the weather and how this bone or that one hurts when it rains.
I can be in and out of a store in 20 minutes or less with a full cart. Others spend that much time in a single 10' section of product trying to figure out which of several identical cans of tuna or olives to put in their cart.
HA! You better stay away from retirement havens such as Florida and Arizona! ;)
Many of the Aldi's are "supersizing"... building out the stores to be 50% larger.
My favorite pickles are German ones, but I don't remember finding my favorite ones at Aldi's. I found them at Nino Salvaggio's. They come in a gallon size jar for only $3.49, and are called HENGSTENBERG. As mentioned earlier I too don't like briney pickles, and find most American pickles on the acidic side. German pickles [[been to Germany 13 times visiting relatives)... have a much better flavor with less brine/acid....
Now calm down Meddle -;)- one day we will be old too!
And you don't have to be very old for friendly Arthur [[arthritis) to come pay a visit to a joint! Hah!
What I can't stand from ALL ages are those screaming into their mobile phone the most profane/ cursing/ inappropriate conversation in public!
Everyone's a captive audience. Though I keep a pair of headphones for such times!!
