Be vigilant when you get out of your car.
so brazen. on a saturday and early afternoon.
A friend told mine told me 3-4 weeks ago that there were some shady characters looking people over at the Kroger at Frazho and Gratiot. I wonder if this is the same guy/people. Same description.
Thieves and crooks are getting brazen, daylight or night, city or burb. They are counting on distracting you to run a scam or rely on your own self-distraction to make their move.
I am NOT blaming the victim here, but I some see women walking to their cars staring into their smart phones, fumbling with keys totally oblivious to their surroundings. I had key-less entry put on my car as an alarm package -- and take care to look around me, press to my alarm keyfob to dis-arm and unlock and get in car fast. It helps to be vigilant to not be surprised.
After living and doing business in the city for so long, It's second nature for me to be vigilant everywhere I go. But I realize that may not be the case for those who only know of life in the suburbs.
Thanks for the heads up OP.
I don't think robbing people is good at all. But for whatever reasons a thief has for robbing someone, I hope they'd still have the decency to pass over things like wedding rings...
If any of you are about to be held up, just call Danny. He will respond and discuss the matter with the would-be robber and take him home to his mother.
The best part:
"The robber fled east to the Wendy's parking lot, where he got into a silver Cadillac..."
In that same parking lot, half an hour before this post, I observed a young woman, cell phone stuck to her ear, loading her car as her three or four year old was running circles around their vehicle as traffic passed through the parking lane.
This could have ended up worse than yesterday's attack.
Yes, the all might-tee distraction when misused: the mobile phone. I have just started to ignore calls when I am at crucial points like loading the car, etc. more when I am out. Often I find most of the calls are not urgent.
Yep. More women are choosing to carry. I just stopped letting the phone rule me. If not convenient or safe I just let the thing ring.
Before I retired last summer, I would often take walks in the nearby neighborhoods after coming home from the afternoon shift. Never had a problem, but the friendly clerk at the 7/11 pointed out a few times certain streets to avoid, based on her conversations with local police. I decided to stick to one route, and wave at the officers when their patrols took them past me. I believe they were actually looking out for "the old guy", as their appearances seemed more frequent as time passed. Kudos to SCS police!
I now take the walks at the nearby lakefront park, in the morning.
^^^ Yep. Such is the consequence of criminal behavior[[s) on a community. Your response to NOT be a victim is calculated as part of the crime.
Yes. That IS the first reasonable response: AVOID.
She was exiting her car as the thief got a jump on her. So unless she was getting out of the car, gun in hand with finger on the trigger, I don't see how she would have been able to use it. It's not like she had time to fumble through her purse for a pistol. A likely outcome would be the thief gets away with a ring AND a gun.
I feel silly. My husband often chooses to sit in the car while I run those errands. Those days I insist we take a dog/s in the car. Anyone trying crap would be dead meat. Our dogs are sweeties but not if someone offers us violence.
I think I've got the answer. How about a one shot cell phone?
Now if I could jus figure out how to stop the idiots from blowing their own head off!
Yep, a gun is not always the solution, especially as the crooks are getting bolder. A combinations of deterrents are best: police or private security presence, vigilance about your surroundings, avoiding being distracted, pepper spray, firearm [[if you choose), etc.
Do you hear yourselves?
I grew up this way living between Harper and Gratiot , VanDyke and E Grand blvd. Never felt safe. Now it's happening in the burbs.
This is no way to live. Well, I guess it is, because so many do it.
This is progress? Nope.
I'm not gloating, I'm glad my Son and his family left SCS and moved North to a nice College town and purchased a nice crib on the banks of the Chippewa River for less money than the house in SCS that he lost that had a cracked foundation and a crumbling street. No need to live like I did or you are now in Metro Detroit.
The Buzz about Downtown Detroit is negated by crooks that are getting bolder.
SMH............Captain America save us all.
In the 8 years or so I have been living in the Mount Clemens area, I see more and more blurbs about crime in the area around Harper and particularly south of Metro Parkway, as the years go on.
Silence is huge as an aid to crime. I am proud that I have many neighbors that speak out.
The economy happened.
In the last recession, Michigan went from the 11th wealthiest state in the country to the 34th wealthiest. There was an article recently about a plant just outside of Kalamazoo that's only paying new hires $10/hr. That's below the poverty line and no one can support a family on that wage.
When people have nothing to lose, they become calloused and lose it.
the problem is in too often a case, the "family" part comes way before the means to support it are figured out. entry level minimum wage jobs were never meant to support a family. If your skill set limits you to only minimum wage, entry level jobs....perhaps figuring that out before starting a family should be encouraged?
well thank god that kroger is closing to move a mile down the road...maybe meijer will clean up their shi*hole of a store on 13 & little mack
Just saw that and came here to post an update but you beat me to it.

What the hell is wrong with people?
Big Brother is watching. ;)Quote:
“Reviewing everything and just bringing her in for the interview and going over the circumstances with her and telling her we didn’t believe her story and she confessed,” Carrier said. “The main thing is, the surveillance video ... we didn’t see the described suspect vehicle in the area, so we didn’t see anybody fleeing the area, so that led to start thinking there was some issues with it.”
I hope that woman is dealt with severely. To waste police resources like she did is just awful! The police department has much more important things to deal with than somebody who was likely just trying to get attention.
Insurance scam...
I bet she pawned it in the midst of a string of bad decisions and realized her spouse would wonder what happened to the ring
Me grumpy in a mug shot? Not a chance! [[Damn, I was beautiful back then, was I not?????)
Why do I wish to slap this non thinker more firmly than I wanted to slap the phantom thief?
Good photo, Ray. What did they get you for?Quote:

HaHa, she lied about the attack! Nothing like blame a black man or two for you either losing or hocking your jewelry. Good for the SCS PD for tracking this down.
Hey handsome. My husband and I both enjoy your posts. Detroit has such history. Still love my city but sometimes have to do a WOW! This didn't happen.
Little street thugs asked me for sex? I am 61, dress demure and hardly interested in them. To me, very strange. Frankly don't know if I am flattered or insulted. Think I'll stick with insulted. Yuck!
Move back, we still need a few champions.
When one needs a convenient lie just blame a Black guy from Detroit.....
smmfh.....see all of the initial responses?
I'm betting you wouldn't no matter what the weather was Ray.
Actually the 7th has been awesome reducing crime. Good neighbors make a huge contribution too. Then we have homeland security, the State police and private security. Almost feel swarmed.
Thinking about moving ourselves to a warmer clime. Winter seem harsher the older one gets. That is maybe a year or two away. No clue where we might land, maybe New Mexico.
Sounds like an insult, would that be the tribe? Lived in NM briefly, liked it.
Unlike most on the forum, I live in Detroit. I love it. Love my house, my neighborhood! My neighbors. My stores.
Alum of WSU, MSU and U of M. I am not an arm chair critic. Take an active role in my city, my neighborhood.
My husband has medical needs, a warmer clime is in the works. Won't be on Detroit yes if we move. My new community will be my effort.
Yeah ... you are most likely right. I am Detroit [[eastside) my husband [[westside). Maybe we should buy a jaccuzzi for the basement. Pretend we are in warmer climes for the nasty winter months. Have great neighbors to shop for us. Just hibernate. Do-able.
Not sure I'd send them to Kroger though.
69 replies to this thread about an attack that turned out to be a fabrication and yet I have yet to see a thread on here about the Inkster police beating the shit out of Floyd Dent.
Am I the only one who thinks that seems really messed up?
That attack in Kroger's Parking Lot was indeed a hoax! It's that woman mentality to blame black males. For in the past she must have a confrontation with black folks. That put her in the state of mental fear.
She does not like black people.
I graduated in 1971, was that the Darshki asst who wanted to be friends with everyone or the little Italian guy who wanted to bust heads. Mostly I remember Ms Kelly the relic from when it was an elementary school.
I had enough credits to graduate in 10th grade, a great relationship with my councelor who knew I didn't want to be there. So mostly I wasn't.
Did have police trying to arrest me once in the parking lot for trying to steal a car. It was my car.
I was the year book editor. Year books stashed in the garage somewhere.
I only shop Kroger for Knorrs brand anything
I don't typically go to the St. Clair Shores Kroger, but I have absolutely no problem shopping at Kroger as a chain because I know what to expect.
Now there are a few Krogers I avoid like plague, because they're just plain ratchet [[I.E. the Redford Kroger and the Kroger at Eastgate Shopping Center), but overall I always receive excellent service, fresh produce and fresh deli meat at Kroger, specifically the one on Mack & Vernier.
I've personally had too many negative experiences with the independent markets in Detroit that are all owned by a particular group of people. But I would gladly shop in the city if there were a Kroger or Meijer closer to my home [[or if the 7 Mile/Gratiot Kroger were still open).

Huh?? What point are you really trying to make?
I'm sure my post is perfectly clear. Do you have a problem with the opinion I offered?Quote:

The point is obvious. Racist crap
We shop every where around the city. Ethnic people abound. If we don't like the service most likely don't go back. Usually discuss issues with owners. Owners like money in the register. Most of my experiences are great. Do range to Hamtramck and occaisionaly Dearborn. We love a wide range of food. Find independant markets mostly fantastic.
Agree 100%. I was just surprised no one else had commented on it and it kept nagging at me.

The best chili dogs and pizza come from these little stores. Got one right around the corner on Mack. Not upscale enough for folks on the lake but suits me fine.
That is nice to hear/read. Those little places can be excellent. Don't get that way much more. Several liitle markets/restarants along Mack.
At an ethnic grocery in my neighborhood one of the cashiers would do a nose holding
eye roll when a paying customer was unkempt and had unwashed clothes on. It was
only one of the cashiers that did this. The rest kept their peace. Sorry if that happened
to you if that was you there.
