It ain't over yet... Michigan case are rising dramatically and now registering the worst numbers in the nation. Please get vaccinated if you haven't already.
Michigan adds 8,015 [April 7] new COVID-19 cases as hospitalizations spike across state
Michigan's COVID-19 positivity rate is above 15 percent in six of the eight state economic regions, up 375 percent from a mid-February low for the year, according to Sarah Lyon-Callo, the state's director of the bureau of epidemiology and population health.
The state is at 491 cases per million people with Detroit [[579) and Lansing [[518) above 500 cases per million and Jackson [[495) is almost" to those numbers, Lyon-Callo said.
One growing and troubling factor has been the increase in cases from the main COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.7, which was imported from the United Kingdom several weeks ago. In random sampling, the B.1.1.7 variant has increased to 1,817 positive tests from 1,200 positive tests last week, the state said.
Overall, Michigan COVID-19 deaths are increasing and are now at 2.4 deaths per million, although deaths of those ages 60 or older are declining. Traverse City and Saginaw are highest at 3.8 and 3.7 per million, respectively. There has been a 75 percent increase in mortality since the March 9 low, with each region averaging more than 20 deaths per week, Lyon-Callo said.

We might be headed back to a total shutdown, if the numbers keep increasing.
I find it interesting that the same restaurants and bars that went rogue and violated the Governor's last shutdown in my immediate area, have now pretty much had to shut down at various times on their own in the last 2 weeks due to staff infections.
Several friends & family members have recently returned from Florida. None flew...they all chose to drive straight through to get there and back. I did that once when I was in my 20's and it kicked my ass. My couch & lazy-boy, and watching the Tigers and the Masters seems like a much better bargain. I'm not dying to take a vacation that bad.
It also seems I see more people wearing masks outside than ever before. I draw the line right there. If it's that airborne, there's nowhere to hide anyway.
I'm also tired of fogged-up glasses from mask wearing. Makes me wish I didn't give up my contact lenses.
Christ, what’s the point? The only way to stop this thing is to either get vaccinated or get healthy [[80% of hospitalizations were obese). This country needs to get healthy, so far the countries hit hardest by the virus are the fattest. Lockdowns clearly don’t work[[as per the WHO). According to NYC data on 4/17/20
99.241% of the deaths have had underlying conditions
99.290% of the deaths have been elderly and or had underlying conditions
0.145% of the deaths have been under 45 and no underlying conditions.
And considering how everything from homicides to child abuse have gone up dramatically since locking down and more businesses have shut down because of the lockdowns we’re making it harder on people to recover. The lockdowns don’t work. Get Healthy, people.
My feelings are mixed re. masks. I only think they 'help' - and not anywhere near 99% or the like. Yet I am compliant, but sometimes get angry stares cycling about outdoors in the area sans one. I figure if I am peddling, wind in my face - even if moderate - enough to dissipate aerosols.
I hardly take COVID lightly.... Nope. Enough died and sick in my circles. But I look at the person driving ALONE masked up? Or walking their dog double masked - again alone. I had someone tell me I should wear one while teaching/ training online to show good mask 'citizenship'.
Rubbish. I am in my home. No mask... and I never-EVER take a photo wearing one. NO slogans, just put the thing on when out and about shopping, etc. Soon as I hit the parking lot, it's off!
As I've said before I neither negate or exaggerate COVID. I take precautions but I know some will not be happy 'til your in your bed, in the dark, windows closed, again alone...
....and masked.
Not without a more distinct authoritarianism; yet initially still disguised as a 'cause' for the greater good. Oh and by they way it's not just a particular type who will be resisting.
Certain hypocrisies will be brought up as well, as one groups it so directed and others not.... Hmmm....
If there is another shutdown, it shouldn't have to be as
extensive and open-ended as the first one was. It can
be a series of targeted brief shutdowns of no more than
several days.
Any newer shutdowns would be focused on detecting and
stopping site-specific outbreaks.
This was done earlier in Japan. We may not have the
public health infrastructure for it. However, the general
idea would be to start with sites and events that are likely
to cause the most hazard. We are actually doing much
of this already.
We are often canceling sports events when one or more
of the players test positive. Many schools have gone
back to remote classes. Many restaurants and bars have
gone back to carryout and patio dining.
The Dearborn Wal-Mart closed the other day for cleaning,
presumably after an outbreak there. An outbreak protocol
should have been put in place to test all employees, quarantine
those testing positive, and vaccinate as many others as
possible.
Schools have been the main driver of this latest surge
though currently there are not enough vaccines available to
vaccinate all of the children.
However there should be enough vaccines soon and there
is certainly enough testing capacity to be able to conduct spot
shutdowns of other kinds of sites that either have an outbreak
or are at imminent risk of an outbreak. Any shutdown would
not have to be long term at all. It just has to be enough to
safely stop the outbreak.
^ Thank you for this info and perspective. Selective action is better as you describe. We cannot lock-down fully again. Though for some the power grab of doing that seems ideal.
Governor Whitmer and I are in the fortunate group that
have been paid continuously throughout the pandemic.
It IS a form of taxation - not literally, but in a practical
sense - when people are asked to not work or not be open
for business. Many have had income losses and they have
not all been made whole. They are some of the ones that
have done the hard work of slowing the pandemic of course
along with front-line workers and others.
NPR just reported that a large surplus of vaccines is expected in the U.S. going into Summer. That means more vaccine doses than there are people willing to take them.
Two reasons for the surplus:
- They over ordered because at the time it was unknown how many would fail to make it through the process.
- We don't yet know whether a second round of doses will be necessary.
Probably a lot of the extra doses are for folks who are refusing the vaccines. If we don't reach herd immunity, and not doing so causes continuing problems for our country... then more drastic measures need to be taken. Not sure what can be done though, but if covid keeps being a continuous problem because of the anti-vaxers... then something... ???
This has nothing to do with “anti-vaxxers” that’s moronic. The reason this is sticking around is because of how unhealthy our nation is. If you’re below the age of 50 and are of a healthy weight you have NOTHING to worry about and if you’re healthy above 50 and below 90 you don’t have much to worry about. I personally know several healthy active 80 year olds with Covid and they didn’t even notice. This virus attacks the old[[who are always at risk per usual) the immune compromised[[ at risk per usual) and the obese. 80% of the “healthy people” hospitalized were obese, therefore not healthy. The masks do nothing per the CDC and WHO, distancing clearly does nothing, locking down did nothing especially since Texas and Florida’s are dropping since opening up. We need to open up. This whole thing is a farce, but lemmings are gonna lemming.
" This whole thing is a farce, but lemmings are gonna lemming. "
My unscientific mind says "Mind, I think Seven&Wyo is right on." Really.
This is what denial looks like. The more words, the more denial.
Jimaz... he's been loud and rambunctious the short time he's been on this forum... maybe he works for the CDC.... or not.
But healthy people are not immune from dying from Covid...
https://abcnews.go.com/US/wrecked-li...ry?id=74148061
I remember the words of that healthy 30 year old guy who went to a young anti-mask gathering... his last words in the hospital before dying were "I think I made a mistake".
Good luck with the anti-masking...
'Many' have obese or over-weight loved-ones, friends or family members[[?). Will that change over night? Are their lives not of value?
Further, not everyone succumbing to C-19 was old or obese. Four I know who died where neither 80+ yo or fat, or with co-morbidity factors.
On one end you've got those demonizing/ hard-critiquing anyone even somewhat over-weight. Then you have the body-positivity folks, claiming there is absolutely nothing wrong with any level of weight, including clear morbid obesity. Sign..... crazy........ Everyone pushing their program/ cause.
Me? I just try to stay at a reasonable weight for my bones, if for no other reason. Weight does not get any easier to carry the older you get.
And maintaining weight is EVEN harder during these lock-downs! I've had to make a hard-self-commandment to use an indoor cycler. It is not easy maintaining weight in this context!
