"The wedding ring and stripes told me this was no rookie. Then he said, 'I gotcha y'all,' as he calmly flicked his cigarette glaring at me through his mirrored aviator shades, and I knew I was going down."

^ Excellent trailer verbiage to the upcoming film! I'm in. Elmore Leonard would be proud.

What is there to say?
This thread proves that in Detroit the only thing stopping speeders is not the Police, but speed bumps. The Police are basically the same luke warm, low morale, understaffed group they've always been and James Craig did little to change that but add some green lights to the city.
The 'no pursuit' policy with DPD must change. The Police Board of Commissioners must actually start directing Police business and stop bumbling around with Willie Bell and Willie Burton yelling at each other.
So let me get this straight... if a cop turns the lights on to pull you over and you don't pull over, they can't go after you?
a lot of states and cities have no chase policies, unless you have committed a felony, like a car jacking or armed robbery.
When you reach a certain speed, traffic conditions, the nature of the reason of the stop, and how much of a danger to society you are at the moment,if they get a tag number they will not chase if they can verify a home address.
Unless one tries that in Fl,Georgia or Ohio, they do not play.
In the UK they have cameras everywhere,if you speed or do stupid stuff, they just send you a ticket in the mail.
So if you obscure your tag,it is rush hour traffic, and you take off going the wrong way of traffic, providing they have not sent the chopper up,then you might as well go home and have dinner.
Here's the policy : "Members may only initiate or participate in a vehicle pursuit where there is probable cause to believe the suspect committed a violent felony."
There are a few tactical teams that have been excluded, but the majority of DPD is bound by this policy.
In your example, if it's a basic traffic violation and you run, they are not allowed to pursue unless the registered owner has felony warrants. What will happen is that the vehicle info will be announced on all frequencies and if there are any birds up, they might follow until you stop. Another thing they might do is show up at the house a few days later.
Another perspective I'll add: deficiencies in the justice system. I've spoken with a DPD Commander in the 7th precinct who told me that they'll arrest some of these guys on the ATVs and impound their vehicles, only to have the judges turn around and release them and give them back their vehicles. My guess is that most of the judges don't actually live in Detroit, so they don't see a lot of this shit firsthand.
I’m driving on Chicago Blvd right around 12th or 14th Street. Speed limit is 25 I think. Get stopped for doing 38 MPH, got a ticket for speeding plus tickets no proof of insurance or registration, which for some reason I couldn’t find. I am a careful driver, I don’t think 38 MPH on Chicago is that bad compared to some of the shit that I see driving around. Went to court and not a single cop showed up for anyone’s ticket that day. Judge or magistrate or whoever he was dismissed everyone’s tickets.
This was quite a while back.
Don't even notice??? Wow, you are numb!
I was here in 85' and remember fast cars and squealing tires and "attempts" to at least try and enforce the law - sometimes successful, sometimes not. I DO NOT remember the ATV problem however in 85'. I certainly don't have all the answers as to what to do, I'm just amazed how "in-your-face" this has gotten. I know Detroit isn't the only city with this problem. I think there was something in the news about Oakland County last week also. Hopefully our police departments will come up with something. It just so ruins the quality of life and the taunting affect you see in the streets is really disturbing.
In the 70s it was get caught on a go cart on the public roadways and it was confiscation of the cart and fines.
same thing with 3 wheelers in the 80s.
Now it is run and if you get hurt while doing so,sue the police because it was their fault that you broke the law.
Where I am at there will be groups up to 50 taking over the entire highway or street and the police just let em ride because it is not worth their career if somebody gets hurt in the stop process.
The police know how to deal with it and have the answers,2 years of burning cities told them the public is not interested in their solutions,so they will continue to push the envelope, and that is why crime is up over 400% in some cities.
The law abiding citizens have lost their rights to a safe and peaceful existence.
There are some parts of the country where that stuff is not tolerated,it works because the public supports enforcement and the ones who enforce it.
But these days the law enforcement that are doing their jobs, are the most controversial, except to the victims.
It is interesting how some know and exploit weaknesses, while other parts do not have that problem because they know it will not be tolerated in the first place,so it is not even attempted.
Street racing and hot rodding have been around sense the car was introduced,we used to street race in the seventies, usually late at night but the police did not chase us,we would just wake up to a stack of tickets on the windshield in the morning, enough of them and you lost your license.
California takes you car and crushes it when caught street racing, does not seem to deter it.
I still love power and speed but I have to admit that it does give me a bit of a thrill when I see a C6,mustang or charger wrapped around a tree while showboating.
Not when bystanders get hurt or killed in the process, most cannot even handle the power of their cars and any moron can spin donuts in an intersection like I did when I was 17,but these are grown adults doing this crap now.
If they want to see smoke roll off of the tires take it to the track,my guess is they will not because they get scared thinking somebody else will show them their ride is crap.
They have not actually achieved any thing, they bought a car that can spin the tires, like a Ford pinto can on wet pavement, for that matter you can make a Prius smoke the tires.
They did not build anything,I have a 97 Jaguar that will beat any charger or mustang top end, while seated in luxury,I paid $800 for it versus their 35 - 40,000 car that cannot even get any traction.
Having 600 HP while not knowing how to use it,just makes people look stupid.
