Walked through the lobby a few minutes ago. Looked into the restaurant and bar areas. Looks good.
It looks interesting on the Web. I was surprised to get a room quoted at $116.00 for Wed. 23 Oct. and more surprised to get one quoted at $110.00 for Sat. 9 Nov. [[both plus taxes). These are very low prices for a quality Hotel in a major City. A weekend in Detroit looks like a good deal for a change from the daily grind..
Coracle, to pick up on your final thought, Detroit hotel rooms are very reasonable. When I lived in NY I travelled with some regularity to Philly, DC and Boston [[I loved taking little 2-day trips, often by MegaBus), and hotel costs offset the cheap transit. When I would fly to Detroit, I always got much nicer rooms at cheaper prices than my stays in the other cities. My fave was Greektown Casino hotel; modern cool room, perfect location, and at the time [[I think this has ended) normal rooms were always $99 or less. It was great. My brother always wanted me to stay with him, but the couch just isn't as good as hotel...
my wife, daughter and i spent the night [[first friday night of october) and having never been in the joint before, i really really liked it...
the rooms were all very well appointed and we had a super view to the north and could see Hart Plaza...
the pool was very nice. my biggest beef with some of the nicer hotels in town [[greektown, antheneum, motorcity) dont have pools. i can understand the casinos because they want you in the casino but A) its not what we're into and B ) if we have our daughter we're looking for some swim time...
we had breakfast and the food was delivered fast and hot. we were talking to the waiter and he said the ENTIRE HOTEL is booked up for the NAIAS in january. this is very good to hear!

Thankful to hear it's nice. I hope the trend of higher occupancy rates continue downtown [[and throughout the region). Benefits so many beyond just the hotels. It also will continue to increase DT foot traffic after 5pm.
I wonder if the uptick in higher occupancy will bring to fruition the expansion of the Crown Plaza with the second tower and attached skywalk to Cobo. I believe I saw that the new owners were seriously considering that option if rental rates were strong enough. I'm sure they want more of a sample size than what they currently have, but with the renovated Cobo soon being complete and more convention business hopefully coming Detroit's way, I'm sure it could make sense to build the second tower.
I do agree with you. I remember when the Greektown Casino hotel opened my wife and I paid round about $100 per night and we happened to be the first customers in room [[or so we were told). We never gamble but used it as a base to visit Orchestra Hall and have a few drinks without having to drive. We like to try newly opened hotels while they are still fresh and before they [[might) increase their prices based on popularity.
I miss Ernie Swan's piano bar.
