View Full Version : English Only Supporters Hold "Conferenece" to promote monoculturalism.

On Saturday, Pat Buchanan hosted a conference to discuss how Republicans can regain a majority in America. During one discussion, panelists suggested supporting English-only initiatives as a prime way of attracting "working class white Democrats." The discussion ridiculed Judge Sotomayor for the fact that she studied children’s classics to improve her grammar while attending college. The panelists also suggested that, without English as the official language, President Obama would force Americans to speak Spanish.

One salient feature of the event was the banner hanging over the English-only advocates. The word conference was spelled “Conferenece.” View it here:

Amazing- they're still dragging out the gallery of crypt-keepers like Pat Buchanan- and I'm sure his hatchet-faced sister, Bay Buchanan was there to catch the last gurgles, and comment on the red, swollen tongue!

Did they hand out white hoods at that Rethugnican "conference?"

As a Colbert Conservative and Social Darwinist, I think Ben Franklin had it right...this country started going to hell when Germans started coming over in large numbers.

“Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion.” Benjamin Franklin 1751 complaining about German immigration primarily into the colony of Pennsylvania.

By 1790, the federal government had already adopted an immigration law that limited becoming a naturalized citizen to free whites. But even that wasn’t enough of a limitation for some great Americans.

“The question is now placed…before the whole American people, whether it is or is not expedient that the naturalization laws be so altered as to put a stop to evils under which our democratic institutions are suffering, and to guard against dangers with which they are threatened from the influx of the vicious, ignorant foreign population; dangers enhanced by the combinations of these foreigners throughout the country.” Samuel F. B. Morse, creator of a single wire telegraph system, and Morse Code, 1836

Maybe Mr. Morse and the early Mr. Franklin had something in common.

When the clinically brain dead do vote, it is usually for the Democrats. I walked by a DNC office downtown a few years back and I thought they were watching Mighty Python because I kept hearing someone shout, "Bring out your dead! Bring out your dead!"

Inaccurate. Convenient conventions withstanding, language is fundamentally about communication. The entire context shapes the activity.

I have to wonder how many of these pics are photoshop'd. They are coming a little too frequently and conveniently. With the majority of the population speaking English in this country, someone coming here and not wanting to learn it is just ignorance. Plain and simple. Talk about minimizing one's opportunities. Every immigrant story coming here and those that were successful assimilating, had one commonality, they all learned English. They may not have learned it well, but they learned it well enough to interact with the rest of the country.

I guess we're going to have to go over this again. First generation immigrants have historically not learned english and it was left to the second and third generations. Do you want me to cite the studies? Again? You just don't learn.

I stand by the above statement. I could care less what they do or did. Your "studies" are irrelevant. Cheddar, studies are like polls, they typically only display the bias of the folks conducting them.

Yeah, why go on things like "facts", and "the truth". We should all just get your opinion on things and go from there.

The bottom line is that first generation immigrants historically have not learned english. There's no bias, that is what happened. There's no question about it, but apparently you like to wallow in your own ignorance.

You have neither.

Quote: "There's no bias, that is what happened."

And this was decided how? Surveys? Internet polls?

You think that all immigrants should be defiant and refuse to learn English, this has been your claim in the past. Obviously you don't know jackshit about what they want to do in reality.

Here is an article for the Arizona Republic:

""As momentum grows to make English the official language in Arizona and across the country, immigrants are having a hard time getting into English classes.

At adult education programs throughout the state, the demand for English classes is so great that immigrants often wait months, and sometimes more than a year and a half, to get in. The long waits hurt immigrants' ability to get jobs and help their children in school.""

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/0726english.html

Here is another:

""NEW YORK - Farzana Morshed arrived from Bangladesh three years ago without any real grasp of English. Her husband had to help her open a bank account, an interpreter was necessary when she needed medical care and she couldn't go anywhere by herself for fear of getting lost.Morshed soon got the language lessons she needed through her local library and a community-based nonprofit organization, and her English is good enough that she can work as an interpreter at a hospital.""

You think that all immigrants should be defiant and refuse to learn English, this has been your claim in the past.

Ambiguous. What does it really mean? What is it based on? There is an old adage in the research arena: "If you can't explain something, you obviously don't understand it". It sort of applies here.

Here is your statement again: "first generation immigrants historically have not learned english"

None of them, a portion of them? I mean what the fuck is that based on? I think it's totally inaccurate. It doesn't even make sense. First generation, like 25 years of the first family member's life was spent in a country where they could not communicate with anyone but those who knew their language? Think about it, it's total bullshit. They couldn't get a job or even navigate by street signs, if what you're trying to pawn off was true.

I'm going to help you out here. I think what you're trying to say is Most first generation immigrants were not fluent in English, but knew enough of it to communicate with others. I think they all learned English to a certain degree.

ccbatson
July-04-09, 10:30 PM
Irrelevant what an immigrant decides to do, or not to do. Why? Individual freedom of choice...it is not the business of government to tell ANYONE how to exercise this choice.

I just love dumping crap on your argument, so, open wide!

Try living here in Miami where there are THREE generations of cubans in particular who refuse to learn English. They've created their own little world where English IS the second language.

There are parts of this town, bordering on the majority, where all business, banking, signage, etc, is in Spanish. It is apparently true in parts of Texas and the southwest as well.

I had to dash into a Bank of America in SW Miami last year before switching banks, and there wasn't a personal banker present who spoke English. No kidding. They had a few, but they were either off, or at lunch. There were three of them present.

Any shop, gas station, mechanic, etc, is 100% Espanol, baby, so you'd better learn it if you care to make it here!

It's not hard to prove when pictures have been photoshop'd (sic). The magification tool in PS can usally detect such activity. Please feel free to use it to support your allegations.

"With the majority of the population speaking English in this country, someone coming here and not wanting to learn it is just ignorance".
Perhaps. Of course, constantly criticizing the language skills of others while making errors in the mechanics of the same language is ignorance too.
Then there's the folks who constantly criticize the English skills of others, and make excuses for their own poor grasp of English Grammar. Many people would call that "hypocrisy".

It is not a debate over proper spelling, it is a political debate over the official language of the country.
