View Full Version : The Axis of Evil, where are they now?

Anyone else notice that the much maligned GWB speech labeling N. Korea, Iran, and Iraq as the axis of evil was a spot on analysis?
Iraq? defeated in war after invading Kuwait, bombing Israel, sponsoring terrorism, and violating terms of a cease fire.
Iran? Racing to develop nuclear weapons, rigging elections, killing it's citizens, had enough?
North Korea? Ferrying materials for nuclear missiles, firing missiles in our direction, threatening nuclear war.
Apparently GWB knew what he was talking about.

1. David Frum created the phrase, not Bush.
2. The phrase was inaccurate. None of those countries have every been allies.
3. They were already doing those things you mentioned.
It definently doesn't fit Merriam-Webster's "partnership (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/partnership), alliance (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alliance)", but it could fit "a point or continuum on which something centers <an axis of social power>" or "a main line of direction, motion, growth, or extension". http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/axis

Took the bait I see, thanks MJS. I knew someone would turn logic upside down and blame these developments on the label.
It carries weight when the President says it, not when David Frum does.
Korea has been, and is (in Iran's case) the peddler of black market nuclear technologies to anyone with a big enough checkbook, INCLUDING Iran, and formerly Iraq....Not allies?

Aside from all that insignificant stuff about Iraq having WMDs and ties to Al Qaeda. But other than that trivial stuff, he was batting 1.000

Why do nations like Iran want to develop Nuke weapons in the first place? Who else has those arms in the neighborhood? Why does India and Pakistan have a Nuke Race? No dialog = arms race...dialog = decreased arms race... or at least an understanding about mutual destruction..Russia and China and USA

The dialog never stopped a nation intent on getting nukes, and it never will.

I believe the term is "strengthening their sphere of influence".

I guess one thing I never understood about the Axis of Evil here is why did W have to call them out by name? What purpose did that serve other than to irritate them? I'm sure they already knew that the US weren't their friends. Wasn't there some other more tactful way of calling someone out than pointing such a pointed finger at them? Isn't that just bad decorum from a political standing?

Or, maybe they are trying to arm themselves now in preparation for what they feel may be an immediate attack by the U.S.
Its kind of like in high school, if you suspected a bigger kid was going to kick your butt, you'd probably try to get somebody who was stronger then them to help you beat them up. Some may even bring a weapon to help equalize the fight.
Please explain how the Obama administration is a bigger threat than the previous eleven administrations? If there was ever a time for them to negotiate peace, its now. If they did, I bet Obama would gladly borrow money from the Chinese to feed every last North Korean until they are as fat as us. Officially, we have been in a military action with them for over 50 years. They initiated a major invasion and they still have the fifth largest army in the world because they won't back down from their desire to conquer the sovereign nation of South Korea. They launched a missile over Japan, a nation that has already kicked their ass, and they have been repeatedly censured by the UN. They have repeatedly broken peace treaties and they are the ones threatening other nations including the United States of America. Its not us versus them; its them versus most of the world.

Do you really hate America so much that you would side with a dictator that starves his own people so he can continue to threaten other nations?
Take it easy Skippy.
I was only offering speculation on why North Korea is acting this way. You toss out that I hate America just like those heroes of yours on AM radio without any rational thought.
Obviously you didn't comprehend anything that I said, otherwise you wouldn't have thrown out the personal attack. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Then you might want to rethink you baseless accusations against me.
Some people here are so blinded by propaganda from the Rushie's of the world that they fail to understand what they read.
There's no need to speculate. They want nukes to threaten other nations into allowing them to take over South Korea. They've been saying they want to take the country over for almost 60 years now. It why they've been armed to the teeth despite constant UN efforts.
What would Obama do if Il-Jong said get out of South Korea or we'll launch a nuke a Japan? Japan does have a limited military because we have promised to protect them from foreign invaders. Do we walk away? How do you think their long time enemy Japan will respond if such a threat is made? Can we stop or blame our trading partner and ally if they want a military build-up then? How about Russia that once controlled Korea? You think they'd concede land to the North Koreans if threatened or lash out instead? What if China fears continued expansion? There's plenty of weapons, war history, and racism between Japan, China, Russia, and Korea to make it a very real possibility that the region could go to hell in a hand basket really fast.
There post #24 has been edited. Please respond to the question at the top.
I'm not even sure how to find Rush. I watch more British and Canadian news than American news. I watch PBS, the History Channel, TLC, and the Discovery Channel. My views are based on the history and geography I get from them and various other sources.
To use your analogy, Yes, I get very touchy about those that even suggest criminals arming themselves to kill cops are simply protecting themselves. Thats all we are in the region, an honorable sheriff.

I never said it is. The North Koreans have been playing these cat and mouse games, to some extent, ever since the end of the Korean War. Its only been in the last decade or so that we started taking these threats more seriously since they've made it known they want to produce nuclear weapons.
The NK government seems to be very flamboyant in their actions, remember a few years back when they fired a rocket over the head of Colin Powell when he was in Japan as our Sec. Of State? I've read in history books that during the negotiations with the U.S. on a cease fire, in the 50's that they made the chairs that American's sat in shorter than their NK counterparts.
We know they wont win in a war against our superior fire power, so they are looking for any kind of leverage they feel that will help them in new negotiations.

LOL!! Way to go, Gistok!
Thanks for those lovely chestnuts from our Dumbander in Chief, or is it Commander in Thief, George Tush.
Can you imagine if Obama came out with such Benzadrine driven rehetoric? The bar was set so low with Tush, it was kind of expected that he wasn't all there. Obama is of such a superior intellect, that even one of those statements would end his presidency.
Thanks for the memories!

He freed the Iraqis from a mass terrorist dictator.

Maybe, but you wouldn't have undecided people and Republicans speaking ill of him. He really made himself look bad, and was a disgrace to the Grand Old Party.
As to the original topic, Bush was right in pointing out the obvious. For that he hardly deserves any praise. Bush also used the obvious to terrorize and control his own people, for that he deserves to be viewed by the history books as the tyrannical leader that he was.

Proof? Easy, now that Obama is President, the victory in Iraq is a good thing and not subject of further attacks on GWB. Number 2? Hello, Saddam is out for good. Fascists are his friend like Chavez, Castro, the ousted president of Honduras and the Iranian regime.

Yes I remember the old days where Obama and Castro were kicken it and drinking Mojitos...afterword on their infamous road trips to Tehran, Obama would lite up a cigar and ask Castro to explain that socialism thing again...just in case he fools the FBI with his birth certificate and is able to run for the presidency...
I am sure glad he out grew out of that Armanutjob, he was always such a downer with that Armagedden droning... we always thought; that he was such a buzz kill. There is nothing more repulsive than our president hanging with an Iranian dictator spewing inflated and made up history and denying reality...but hey you know those socialists and middle-easterners stick together.
