Franklin Street is part of a formerly hip area of Detroit known as Rivertown.  During the seventies and eighties a number of clubs and night spots sprung up in this area of old warehouses and small businesses along the river just east of downtown.

A giant hand offers the passerby a giant glass of beer at the Franklin Brewing Company.  Its recent closing, due to the impending demolition of the area for the permanent casinos, deprived of Detroiters of a fine kitchen and brew.
