Abandoned in the 80's, the GAR Building is now boarded up and, hopefully, will survive.


GAR Building

A lone man awaits an infrequent bus on Grand River Avenue in front of the former GAR Building.

Once the gathering spot for Michigan's American Civil War veterans' organization -- the Grand Army of the Republic -- this triangular fortress-like structure later served as a City of Detroit Senior Recreation Center. I played an number of chess games there in the early 70's.
